Two Kinds of Definites in Classifier Languages
نویسنده
چکیده
Contrary to most earlier claims in the literature, we demonstrate that crucial aspects of definiteness are overtly marked in classifier languages and follow recently established typological patterns of definiteness marking. Specifically, demonstrative descriptions are used for familiar definites while definite bare nouns are used only in contexts licensed by uniqueness. In classifier languages such as Mandarin (Cheng & Sybesma 1999) and Thai (Piriyawiboon 2011), both of which lack articles, bare nouns can be interpreted in a number of ways, including as definites, scopeless indefinites, and kinds. In the literature, the availability of definite interpretations for bare nouns is often established on the basis of a very simple sentence like the following. We will illustrate our claims for Thai; essentially identical facts hold for Mandarin: (1) mǎa dog kamlaN

Two kinds of definites in numeral classifier languages
Numeral classifier languages are shown to distinguish definite noun phrases licensed by uniqeness from those licensed by familiarity. Unique definites are expressed by bare nouns, while familiar definites are expressed by indexicals such as demonstrative descriptions or pronouns. This generalization parallels the observation by Schwarz (2009) that German distinguishes unique versus familiar or ...
متن کاملNumeral Classifiers , ( In - ) Definites , and Incremental Themes in Korean
Those numeral classifier languages like Korean, Japanese, and Chinese mobilize classifiers together with numerals in naming and counting objects in the world. Classifiers serve to classify objects according to their shape, function and other semantic features often culturally defined. Discrete (or fuzzy) numerals are used to count the number of objects. In Korean and Japanese, plural marking al...
متن کاملWhy Free Relatives Sometimes Behave as Indefinites
In this paper I show that the puzzling behaviour of (realis) Free Relatives (henceforth: FRs) as definites in some contexts and indefinites in others is best accounted for under the assumption that the covert D(eterminer) head that takes the overt CP as its complement (cf. [2]) is ambiguous: first, it can denote the sigma-operator (see [10]), which returns an object of type e, namely the maxima...
متن کاملCrosslinguistic Notions of (In)definiteness
We argue that both Russellian and Heimian definites exist in natural languages. Our account captures both the commonality and difference between the two. Further, we suggest that the Russel-lian/Heimian distinction extends to indefinites too.
متن کاملA Chain-starting Classifier of Definite NPs in Spanish
Given the great amount of definite noun phrases that introduce an entity into the text for the first time, this paper presents a set of linguistic features that can be used to detect this type of definites in Spanish. The efficiency of the different features is tested by building a rule-based and a learning-based chain-starting classifier. Results suggest that the classifier, which achieves hig...
